Learn English at Home with Skype
How did you learn your own language as a child? You learnt from your parents and your peers no doubt like all of us. There is a dispute that rages between those who think that children learn languages better than adults and those who don’t. Either way, adult or child, the best way to learn English is from real people. You can read books, and they do help, but how do you know your words are pronounced correctly. You don’t. You need someone to help you check. You may argue that this can be done by software programs and to a point it can.
These are useful aids to help you learn, if used together with recordings and translator tools on the Internet. However you just can’t beat real help from a real person, a native speaker of the language that you want to learn. Well now you can get that kind of help from home. With an Internet connection and a free software download, you can have your computer ready to connect you to a real native speaker and qualified teacher. Its the modern way.
So what can you do to learn a language on-line?
To be effective in a foreign language, you need to be able to speak and listen, and, read and write. All these four disciplines can be done with your on-line English teacher. The main focus depends on what you want to do. If you want to practise your talking skills, as most people want to do, then very often the session will start with conversation.
“To get spontaneous conversation going, I use lots of random pictures until something sparks the students interest. From that moment one it is hard to get them to stop!”, says Dave Dand, one of the English Club’s tutors.
Conversation is probably the most difficult aspect of learning a language to recreate at home. Learning English with Skype solves the problem completely. Additionally, students are invited to read authentic material on-line with their instructor. This encourages good pronunciation and helps build vocabulary.
Dave goes on to say, “Very often my students read an article that I have selected then we discuss it at length. At the end of the session I set my students homework and this may be to write a short summary of the article and our conversation. During the next lesson we will go through the homework together and we will talk about the sentence construction and I will correct the text. I find that over a period of time, this method works very well. The students enjoy their conversations and find that their overall ability in English improves by working on the four primary disciplines together. Additionally, all the lessons are recorded and this forms part of the listening homework too“.
